The Dawoodi Bohras of the Far East
The picturesque nations of the Far East have been home to Dawoodi Bohras for more than two centuries. Community members have settled and lead productive lives across Japan, China, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Indonesia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore.
The early nineteenth century was a time of remarkable mercantile vigour with the boom in the industrial revolution in the West and an increase in maritime trade between different regions. With the wind of these developments in their sails, Dawoodi Bohra merchants from Gujarat set off on commercial ventures from the port of Surat to Southeast Asia, eventually settling down in different parts of the region. Their bold forays led them to find a new home where they would go on to thrive and build successful careers, seamlessly integrating with local communities on the strength of their values of respect, humility and humanity.
Harmony & Goodwill
The prophet Mohammed ﵆ has stated: “Love for one’s land of abode is an integral part of faith.” The leader of the Dawoodi Bohra community, His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin stresses the fundamental message of loyalty conveyed in this statement which guides Dawoodi Bohra civic engagement wherever they live.
In light of this message, Dawoodi Bohras across the Far East have not only embraced and upheld the laws of their countries of residence, but actively contributed to the social, cultural and economic enrichment of their respective societies through harmonious coexistence and goodwill in all endeavours.
Be it in ethical business practices, social welfare initiatives or environmental stewardship programs, Bohras espouse and have been beneficiaries of the shared values of duty, respect, and mutual harmony across the region.
