The Dawoodi Bohra community in Sri Lanka has undertaken the restoration and enhancement of the Bambalapitiya Railway Station as part of its continued commitment to public service and civic contribution.
This project forms part of the Government’s “Clean Sri Lanka” and “Dream Destination” programmes and contributes to a broader national initiative aimed at transforming 100 railway stations across the island while preserving their cultural and architectural heritage.
The initiative was marked by a groundbreaking ceremony attended by Minister of Transport and Highways Hon. Bimal Ratnayake, Hon. Deputy Speaker of Parliament Dr. Rizvie Salih, Governor of the Western Province Hon. Hanif Yusoof, and other senior officials and community representatives.

Originally established in the 19th century, the Bambalapitiya Railway Station remains an important part of Colombo’s coastal rail network, connecting key residential and commercial areas. Located in one of the city’s most active neighbourhoods, it continues to serve thousands of commuters daily.
The project aims to transform the station into a modern, accessible, and commuter-friendly space while maintaining its significance as a key urban transport hub. The upgrade will focus on improving essential facilities and creating a cleaner, safer, and more comfortable environment for daily passengers. The project is expected to be completed within the next few months at an estimated cost of Rs. 60 million.
“Our vision for this project is simple but meaningful: to improve the functionality, comfort, and aesthetics of the station while preserving its importance as a key urban transport hub,” Khuzaima added.
A representative of the Dawoodi Bohra community, Khuzaima Jafferjee, said, “We are grateful for the opportunity to contribute towards improving a public space that serves thousands daily. As a community, we remain committed to supporting initiatives that enhance the everyday lives of the people of Sri Lanka.”
