We are the Dawoodi Bohra community of Indonesia
Dawoodi Bohras have settled in towns across the island nation of Indonesia since before it gained independence. The first Dawoodi Bohras arrived in the late 19th century with gradual migrations continuing over the years. The early settlers fashioned a business identity as merchants and seasonal traders of local items such as spices, herbs, etc. Over the years, the island province of Bali became the centre of the community’s activities.
The 51st Dai, Syedna Taher Saifuddin visited the country in 1953, and since then Dawoodi Bohras have fostered warm relations with Indonesian society. During his visit, Syedna Saifuddin interacted with community members living in different parts of Indonesia and met President Sukarno and Vice President Mohammed Hatta. He also addressed students at Jakarta University and Islamic University where during one of his addresses he appreciated the vibrancy of Indonesia in terms of its pluralistic society and its natural beauty. His son and successor, the 52nd Dai, Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin visited the country in 1979 and 1997—where like his esteemed father—he was warmly received by the Indonesian leadership.
The 53rd Dai, Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, visited the country in 2019 and continued in the footsteps of his predecessors by visiting Bohra communities across the country. Throughout his visits, His Holiness interacted with community members, and encouraged them to celebrate their religious and cultural heritage while at the same time embracing the unique values of their Indonesian identity.
Today, Dawoodi Bohra families are spread across the Indonesian islands with settlements in Denpasar Bali, Jakarta, Palu, Pontianak, Surabaya and Makassar. Community members run successful businesses and strive to contribute to the nation’s development and social welfare under the banner of Project Rise. They continue to foster ties of friendship and goodwill within the nation’s vibrant multicultural fabric as was attested to by the Indian Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi when he mentioned community members’ integrity and contributions to society in a speech to the Indian diaspora on the sidelines of the G20 Meet 2022 in Bali.
